Death Registration Appointment

To make sure that you can register the death with Dudley Registration Services, we need to ask you a few questions.

The Attending Pratitioner (doctor) completing the medical certificate of cause of death will send the certificate to the Medical Examiner for scrutiny. Once the Medical Examiner is satisfied, they will email it directly to the Regiser Office and contact the family to discuss the cause of death. We will send you an email with a link to book an appointment once we have received the paperwork from the Medical Examiner and can proceed with the registration. You cannot book an appointment until we have received the paperwork.

If your appointment is at Thomas Robinson Building, please wait in your car when you arrive. The registrar will call you around the time of your booked appointment, there is no receptionist on site. For appointments at Priory Hall, please check-in at reception when you arrive. No more than two people can attend the appointment.

IMPORTANT: YOU WILL NEED TO ADVISE THE REGISTRAR DURING YOUR APPOINTMENT OF THE NAME OF THE FUNERAL DIRECTOR YOU WILL BE USING. Death certificates can be issued at your appointment, please pre-pay when booking for the number of certificates you require. We do not accept cash or cheques, all payments are by card only. The registrar will record the death onto the Government Tell us once system which will notify government departments so you will not need death certificates for them.  However, death certificates will be needed for anything private such as bank and building society accounts, insurances, private pensions etc.

You have a legal duty to register the death within 5 calendar days unless the coroner is involved. If the death has gone to inquest you will NOT be required to register the death. If you need any further information then please email register.office@dudley.gov.uk or call us on 01384 815373

A death can only be registered in the registration district where it occurred. The following nursing homes are not located within the Dudley Registration District: Clearview Nursing Home, Prestwood Nursing Home, Ableview Nursing Home and Himley Mill Nursing Home. If you are unsure whether the place of death is within the Dudley Borough, please check the local council online at gov.uk so that you can book your appointment in the correct registration district.

You cannot make an appointment online if the death occurred outside the Dudley Borough, please email register.office@dudley.gov.uk or call 01384 815373 if you wish to make an appointment in these circumstances

No more than two people may attend an appointment to register a death. You should arrive on time for your appointment but please do not arrive more than 10 minutes before your appointment time. Certificates can be prepaid for when you book your appointment and are also available to order online afterwards if you prefer. We cannot accept cash or cheques. The burial/cremation form can be sent directly to the funeral director from the registrar, you will be advised about this at your appointment.
